Album Review: Beyoncé - Lemonade.

Hey everyone, sorry I haven't posted much but I have been super busy with final year assignments. I am finishing university in a month which is crazy so I'm working hard but I just had to review Beyoncé's new album that dropped yesterday (or was it today? I can't get my head around the time zones, sorry!)

So let's get into it!

So Beyoncé has finally blessed us with a new album after three years. 

The album, titled Lemonade, came a surprise. It was released onto Tidal right after the airing of her new HBO film of the same name. The film was an hour long and served as a visual companion to the album, telling us the story of a woman's heartbreak over a romantic betrayal with Queen B narrating throughout.

Throughout the film, there were clips of Beyoncé performing the new songs with themes of rage, heartbreak and forgiveness. Each stage of the betrayal was shown throughout, labelled: intuition, denial, anger, apathy, loss, reformation, forgiveness, resurrection, hope and redemption.

Lemonade has 12 songs, including the empowering Formation which Beyoncé debuted at the Super Bowel halftime show with Coldplay and Bruno Mars.

This album is definitely one of her best and it came as a shock to me that it seems like Jay-Z cheated on Beyoncé, if not a few times? I mean, man, you have Beyoncé, what more could you want!? I was surprised to learn that she forgave him considering she's made a song similar to this experience.. Irreplaceable, anyone??? 

Anyway, Sorry and Sandcastles are definitely my favourites so far. Sorry is a great unapologetic I-don't-need-you anthem and the beat is just fantastic and it also had Serena Williams featuring in it, twerking and showing what she's got! Sandcastles is stunning because it is completely stripped of all the technology and beats. It's just Beyoncé and a piano, her voice is just unbelievable and blows me away every time.

The film itself was a work of art. However, I'll be honest and say that some parts were better than others. I didn't enjoy every song, perhaps I need to listen to them more for me to like them. Some parts I did not understand at all but overall the concept of the film was clear to me and was beautifully done. 

At one point, Beyoncé spoke/sang about the troubles black women have and what black people go through in general. The mothers of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and Eric Garner also starred in the film, holding up photos of their beloved sons whose lives were taken away so unnecessarily. That part definitely broke my heart for sure. Other well known faces pop up throughout the film.. Zendaya, Serena Williams, Jay-Z and little Blue Ivy just to name a few.

This film and album was unique and thought-provoking. It is definitely something new and refreshing from Beyoncé even it is about Jay-Z's infidelity and her heartbreak. I feel like her style of music has definitely changed but she is still way ahead of the game by bringing attention to the problems black people face and being honest that her marriage isn't 100% perfect. She is still showing everyone why she is the Queen and her creativity is just a testament to how hard she works to bring us something new and awe-inspiring.

Albums That Changed My Life!

Hello! 

This post is about the albums that have changed my life. I don't mean the ones I just like to listen to but the ones that really mean something to me. I was inspired to do this because of Emma Blackery's video which you can watch here. We have a similar music taste and I realised I've never really sat down and thought about what albums meant something to me. So, let's get into it!

Blink 182 - Blink 182 (self-titled)

Blink 182 was probably the first rock band I got into, thanks to my best friend. My teens just consisted of me listening to rock music and being a moody goth. These guys just seemed so cool and unique compared to everyone else and I loved Tom Delonge's vocals on every song he performed. They are probably the reason why I fancied skater boys (and still do!) so much. My favourite songs on this are: I Miss You, I'm Lost Without You and Feeling This.

Avril Lavigne - Let Go

I loved Avril so much! She seemed like such a cool girl and made me feel like girls can be rockstars as well. My brother got me into her and we'd spend hours singing our hearts out to her album in his room. Sk8er Boi was the first song I heard from her and I instantly loved it and it still gets me dancing like a crazy person in my room to this day. My favourite songs on this are: Complicated, Things I'll Never Say and of course, Sk8er Boi.

Paramore - Riot!

Again, I have my best friend to thank for getting me into this band. I was obsessed with Paramore for a long time and longed to look like Hayley Williams every single day of my teens. Like Avril, she taught me that girls can be badass and cool too. My favourites on this are: Misery Business, crushcrushcrush and That's What You Get.

P!nk - I'm Not Dead

This lady has always been my favourite female singer. I loved her earlier albums but this album was just incredible. She was just a completely different artist compared to everyone else and she was kickass! She can rock out and also perform beautiful ballads. My favourites on this are: Stupid Girls, Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely), Who Knew and Dear Mr President. 

 The Script - Science & Faith

The Script are my all time band and I have seen them live three times so far! Although I did love their first album, their second album changed my life for sure. I love every single song on it and it has my favourite song by them on it; Science and Faith. They make me feel all of the emotions and find the right words for my feelings when I can't. They've done alot for me and they are severely underrated. My favourites on this are: Science and Faith, If You Ever Come Back, Nothing and For The First Time.

Beyoncé - 4

Of course, the Queen would make it onto this list. Beyoncé is one of my favourite singers of all time, she is just an incredible artist. She is a stunning woman and is the perfect person to listen to when you feel like a badass diva. My favourites on this are: Countdown, Run The World (Girls) and Love On Top. 

Twenty One Pilots - Vessel & Blurryface

Twenty one pilots came into my life sometime last year and I am so glad I got into them. I did a post dedicated to them a while ago. I haven't been this obsessed with an album (or two, in this case) in years until now. Tyler Joseph is an incredible singer and uses his insecurities and depression to help others through his songs. The lyrics are incredible and if you've experienced depression in your life before, they'll mean everything. My favourites on Vessel are: Holding Onto You and Guns For Hands. My favourites on Blurryface are: Ride, Stressed Out, Tear In My Heart, Lane Boy and Doubt.

So there you go, those are the albums that changed my life!

Music Monday: Music I've Been Loving #6.

Good afternoon, everyone! This is my first Music Monday of 2016! I haven't done one since about December which is just mad. But I have a whole load of new music I've been loving. So let's get into it!

I have been loving Sia's new album which came out in January I think, I'm not too sure. This song is so good, it has such a good beat to it and the chorus is a little unusual. I think she has brought out a new video for it now and it has Sean Paul featuring on it now as well. Well worth a listen!

I have always loved Kelly Clarkson, I may not have listened to much of her recent stuff because I've gone on to listen to different stuff. I've listened to her since her Breakaway album back in 2004 which me and my brother listened to over and over again. Recently, she performed an acoustic version of this song on American Idol which blew everyone away because of the pure heartwrenching emotion she was displaying. So much so that she couldn't even finish the song due to her tears and she even had some of the judges crying. So I YouTubed the original version and although it has more of a dancey-ish beat to it, I still love it. It is heartbreaking but very empowering towards the end. If you're gonna listen to this one, keep a few tissues handy because you'll need them!

This one is not a new song, I think it's actually a couple years old now. But I had never heard of it before until I saw it on my telly the other day and I instantly fell in love with it. Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake's vocals go together so well. It is such a feel good song and has you dancing around in your room. But it also makes me sad because Michael is not here with us anymore and we can't hear any more great hits like this.

I am loving The 1975's new album! This is possibly my favourite song out of all of them. Matty Healy just looks so good and the song has you singing into a hairbrush at all hours in the morning! Well worth a listen.

I would never have thought Beyonce and Coldplay could sound good together until now! Coldplay have been bringing out some good songs lately and this is one of them. It took a while for me to get into it and there was alot of controversy about the video because some people thought they were using Indian stereotypes and they were using cultural appropriation, particuarly with how Beyonce is dressed throughout the video. But I find it celebrates the wonders and beauty of India but each to their own. It is such a good song, it is such an anthem that has you stamping your feet and clapping along.

Little Mix have really become a girl band that I actually like! They always have great songs to dance to and sing along with. This one is a little different, a bit slower and it features Jason Derulo. I'm not a huge fan of Derulo and I think the song would've worked even better without him but it still slays because of the girls' vocals. Their voices have grown and gotten so much stronger, especially Perrie. Unbelievable, definitely listen to this.

Ellie Goulding is just so beautiful and a fantastic human being. I saw her a couple of weeks ago in the Echo Arena for the second time and she was incredible as ever. Dancing, singing and shimmying across the stage as well as playing guitar and the drums. She sounds exactly like she does on her albums. Her new album is so good and well worth a listen! These two songs are a good place to start.

Music Monday: Music I've Been Loving #5.

Hey, everyone! So today, I have another post about the music I've been really into these past few weeks. Now, I haven't actually got many artists on here.. in fact there is just one band on here that I have become completely obsessed with. Like, I haven't listened to anyone else for the past three weeks. I will attach videos that I think you should check out and I hope you like my choices. Feel free to recommend me any other music!

Now, I don't know about you but I've seen this cover of Can't Help Falling In Love going around on Tumblr for a good couple of years and I loved listening to it like many others.

Finally, I decided to YouTube the cover and found it was Tyler Joseph from twenty one pilots singing it. Intrigued, I decided to go ahead and see what else this band sang and I was blown away. 

Twenty one pilots was originally a four piece band before becoming a twosome (Tyler Joseph - vocals, ukele, piano etc. and Josh Dun - drums). These guys are absolutely unbelievable and I am kicking myself for not having discovered them earlier. Their songs and lyrics may be triggering and affect alot of people emotionally because it does contain some dark stuff as Tyler has been through alot with depression, insecurities and suicidal thoughts. I thought listening to this stuff on repeat would really depress me but it hasn't, it's actually incredible. Having gone through emotional troubles of my own in the past, I really connected to the lyrics and songs and really felt Tyler's pain/emotion. He found words to describe things that I had felt in the past and did it better than I ever could. 

There aren't enough words to describe how talented Tyler is. He writes these songs, plays piano, ukulele and more while also being able sing AND rap. This music is incomparable to anything else. With emotional and depressing lyrics like theirs, you'd expect it to be all ballad-like or emo but it's really not. It is mixture of rap, pop, techno/dance, rock and screamo as well as piano ballads with just Tyler singing on his own. I have never heard anything like this before. With Josh's thumping drum beats, you forget sometimes what Tyler is actually talking about because it's covered your urge to dance to the incredible music.

Those are just a few songs I love although there are tons more but this post would be incredibly long if I posted all of them! I can't express how much I have come to love these two guys. I've listened to every song of theirs, watched nearly every interview and I have fallen completely in love with them. They are incredibly kind to their fans and are really not at all smug with their increasing fame status. 

Their music is not something you can just listen to once and decide whether you love it or not. You have to give each album a really good few listens and let me tell you, these guys are worth listening to. They're nothing like what's on the radio today and they're very unique. Don't be put off by the fact it may not be something you usually listen to. I didn't think it was something I'd like either but because I decided to give them a chance, I now love them. You could too. 

I'm now proud to say I'm part of their clique! |-/

Album Review: Adele - 25.

Hey everyone, hope you're having a good week so far. I haven't done an album review in over a year! That is madness. But today I am reviewing a very exciting new album by Adele! I have waited for a few years to hear new material from her and she did not disappoint. I will review each track as we go along. 

I instantly pre-ordered the album once I heard her new single Hello, which is out now, and it arrived on the 20th of November. I said on Instagram that I will review it sometime this week because I don't feel like you can review an album the day it's come out because it doesn't give you time to really enjoy the songs or understand the lyrics/message. So I listened to it repeatedly over the weekend and I completely love it like I knew I would. It takes somebody extraordinary to follow up an album like 21!

25 is different to 21 as Adele calls it a 'make-up record' to her old self and she becomes nostalgic and melancholy about time passing as well as incorporating themes of regret and being a mother. It's a stark contrast to Adele's previous work as the music is different with electronic beats and creative rhythm with 1980's R&B and organs. She collaborated with a whole host of writers including producer Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder (singer of Onerepublic) and Bruno Mars himself. These collaborations completely work making her album sell more copies than any other album in history in its first week!

Reviewing The Album: Track by Track

Hello

Never has someone just saying 'Hello, it's me' rocked the world like Adele did. This song was an instant hit, gaining millions of views within days and topped the charts in 28 countries as well as becoming the first single to ever sell one million downloads in a release week. Her vocals on this are impeccable and hearing her sing this live is even better. The soaring chorus reminds you why Adele deserves that number one spot.

Send My Love (To Your New Lover)

I think this my favourite track on the album actually. It's always great to hear Adele doing a pop song and this one is a nice surprise. She teamed up with Britney Spears hitmaker Max Martin for this one and it has some elements of Taylor Swift in it with the plucky rhythm of the guitar and upbeat clapping. Adele describes it as a 'happy you're gone' song referring to an ex. It's weirdly upbeat for an Adele album but it's a great one to listen to.. preferably with a glass of wine in your hand, chanting this to an ex lover of your own! 

I Miss You

Adele reunites with 21 producer Paul Epworth on this and it is a song with a certain mood, desire and love. Her voice echoes over the beats and an great organ but it lacks a little bit of oomph. I don't really know how to explain it but the music makes you feel like it's building up to a climax that'd be amazing but it ends up not really going anywhere else. But still good to listen to!

When We Were Young

Although Adele is only 27, this is a fantastic song where she reflects on moments that have come and gone that she'll look back on in years to come. Her lyrics "you look like a movie, you sound like a song, my god this reminds me of when we were young" are simply stunning and have you reflecting on your own past. There's one high note that she hits in this towards the end and it gives me goosebumps all over (4:32 in the video). 

Remedy

 Teaming up with Onerepublic singer, Ryan Tedder, this wonderful song captures the love she has for her child perfectly as well as for her best friend, grandparents and her boyfriend. But over a simple piano melody, she makes you understand what it is like being a mother. Sweet lyrics like "I will be your remedy" remind us how strong a mother's love and protectiveness can be.

Water Under The Bridge

Adele and Greg Kurstin make this a disco-pop song featuring an electro-drum beat and a tropical riff. Her vocals over this melody is fantastic and her lyrics are really perceptive making it completely her own.

River Lea

This song is basically a dedication to an east London river but with a deeper meaning to it. Adele has said time and time again that fame will never change her and her songs are based on things that happen in everyday life rather than focusing on the fame. With a bluesy melody, she sings "it's in my roots, it's in my veins, in my blood" proving that you can take the girl out of Tottenham and have her win Oscars, Grammys and more but you can't take Tottenham out of the girl.

Love In The Dark

Adele singing ballads is definitely her speciality but this one is a little different. This time she is the one breaking hearts rather than being the one heartbroken. An emotive piano melody and strings really amp up the emotional impact of the song and Adele's voice runs up and down the scale perfectly.

Million Years Ago

This is a bittersweet song and it really hits home about the reality of growing up and missing moments of your past. This acoustic moment is beautiful as Adele croons about missing her mother, her friends and the parties. It leaves you reaching for a tissue and remembering your own childhood.

All I Ask

Now when Adele teamed up with Bruno Mars, I did expect a funky tune like Uptown Funk or Teasure. Instead, they both created a beautiful piano-led ballad that'll have you bawling. If you're not bawling, you're grabbing a hairbush to sing this one out with all your might.

Sweetest Devotion

This is another song dedicated to her child and it is a glorious finale to the album. Influenced by Madonna's 1998 album Ray of Light, Adele sings for her child over a country guitar and a wistful melody. It's lovely and tender with the final note of uplifting love and adoration that is a stark contrast to the heartbreaking Someone Like You on 21. A wonderful end to a wonderful album.

Music Monday: Music I've Been Loving #4.

Hey everyone, I have a post about the music I've been really loving this past month or so. So many good songs have come out from artists I love and I've found a new one as well! For some reason, I can't find the actual music videos for two of them but the live versions are just as great, if not better, to watch anyway. I hope you like my choices and maybe you can recommend me some of your own.

First up, it's Adele. I think everybody has been anticipating Adele's return to music just as much as me and I love her new song 'Hello'. I'm sure you've heard the song before by now as it gathered millions of views within the first few days of being released! She has come back bigger than ever and I love her voice, her personality and talent. I cannot wait for her album which I have already pre-ordered. It comes out very soon and you should pre-order it too!

I have been loving The Weeknd's new album so much. It's fantastic and he has a whole load of incredible artists joining him on there like Labrinth, Lana Del Rey and Ed Sheeran. He and Ed Sheeran's song 'Dark Times' is soooo good. Ed Sheeran is just incredibly talented and I love every single song and cover he's ever done so two of my favourite artists collaborating together is all the more reason to love them both even more. 

Next are two songs from the magnificent Sia. These are two new songs from her new album that is coming out in January and they called 'Alive' and 'Bird Set Free'. 'Alive' is a fantastic song that has you singing along as loud as you can until your throat feels raw, really feeling the emotions of the song. 'Bird Set Free' genuinely makes you feel.. well, free. Her lyrics are incredible and very inspiring. Sia is probably the only one who can make voice breaking sound amazing.

Last of all and definitely not least is a new artist I'm loving called Aurora. Her cover 'Half the World Away' by Oasis, I believe, is stunning. She is a very pretty girl and I love the simplicity of her video. Her voice is haunting and really gives me goosebumps. Music Monday: Music I've Been Loving #3.

Hey, so I fancied doing a post on some of my favourite music at this moment. I haven't done one of these in ages and I'm really into some dancey music as well as some older music right now. Most of these songs you will probably know  and some you may not so I hope you enjoy this post. 

Rihanna

Bitch Better Have My Money is such a good song although I didn't actually like it at first! I wouldn't call myself a fan of Rihanna but she does come out with some great hits every now and then that I like.

Sam Smith feat. Disclosure

This song is soooo amazing. I am literally obsessed with it. I love anything Sam sings to be honest and this second collaboration with Disclosure is another favourite on my list.

Madonna feat. Nicki Minaj

I can't even explain why I like this song to you. I don't particularly like Madonna as an artist, some of her old songs are good, but I've never been into her. But for some reason, I really like this song and its beat is something you can really dance to. 

Fleetwood Mac

I absolutely adore Fleetwood Mac, their songs are so good. I've been listening to them non-stop recently and they make me feel empowered and want to put flowers in my hair, hahaha.

Toto

Ever since I heard this song on Family Guy, I've hunted it down on YouTube and listened to it nearly everyday. I just love the guitar riff in it and it's such a fantastic hit.

Billboard Music Awards 2015: Red Carpet Review.

 So, the Billboard Music Awards were hosted last night in Las Vegas by Ludacris and Chrissy Teigen in the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Now I usually find many favourite outfits from award shows and have to narrow them down to just a few so I can write a post about them for you. However this year was so disappointing in the fashion department in that only a couple impressed me. 

Here they are:

Taylor Swift bared her skin in a beautiful, white, cutout Balmain jumpsuit and walked the red carpet in silver platform heels. She carried a black purse with the song title Bad Blood printed on the front for which she premiered the video for at the show itself.

 Charli XCX never fails to impress me with her outfit choices - sometimes they're crazy and colourful but sometimes she can also show off her elegant side just like she did with this 1930's vintage black slip dress. I think she looks absolutely beautiful as she pairs the look with a red lip and smokey eyes. She also wore Stuart Weitzman shoes and Vivienne Westwood jewellery to complete her look.

 I don't personally like Meghan Trainor but I think she looked stunning in this sparkly floor length Badgley Mischka gown that came with a thigh-high split. It showed off her curves perfectly and she also wore black platform sandals that went so well with the outfit.

Idina Menzel didn't go overboard and kept it simple and classy in this Badgley Mischka custom dress paired with Brian Atwood heels, a Judith Leiber clutch, an Efva Attling necklace and Jacob & Co. earrings and bracelets. Her hair looks absolutely incredible here and I think it was the best part of her look.

Music Monday: Music I've Been Loving #2.

Hey everyone, so I thought I'd do another post on music I've been really getting into recently and becoming obsessed with. Some of the artists you'll probably know and some you may not know so I'll explain to you who they are and what songs I think you should check out!

Ludovico Einaudi

Ludovico Einaudi is an Italian composer and pianist. My taste in music is very varied; it goes from Shania Twain to Green Day to Kanye West to Ludovico Einaudi. He produces wonderful classical music that is so relaxing to listen to. Fairytale and Nuvole Bianche are just two of my favourites by him. But I'd recommend pretty much YouTubing all of his music, it's pretty spectacular.

The Weeknd

The Weeknd AKA Abel Tesfaye is one of my new favourites and I don't often have favourites in the RnB/HipHop genre. I discovered The Weeknd through his song Earned It on the soundtrack of the Fifty Shades of Grey film and I became obsessed with it. I explored his music a bit more and became obsessed with his cover of Beyoncé's song Drunk In Love (warning: which is alot more graphic lyrically than Beyoncé's original!). He's progressing rather well within his career having shared the stage with Kanye West in this year's festival Coachella and he's had Drake perform on a few of his songs too.    

Patsy Cline

Bit of a huge throwback here but ever since I've heard this song on the television series Fargo, I have fallen in love with it. I love quite old songs and Patsy Cline was one of the best back in 60's. She was one of the most successful and best singers of the 20th Century and this proves why.

Music Monday: Music I've Been Loving #1.

Hey everyone, so I thought I'd do a post on what music I've been really getting into recently and becoming obsessed with. Some of the artists you'll probably know and some you may not know so it's my job to explain to you who they are and what songs I think you should check out.

So let's get into it:

George Ezra

  George Ezra is an English singer-songwriter and he's released two EPs Did You Hear The Rain? in 2013 and Cassy O' in 2014 before bringing out his debut studio album, Wanted On Voyage, mid-2014 which reached number one in the UK. 

Favourite songs: Listen To The Man (which has the wondeful Ian Mckellen in its video!) and Blind Man In Amsterdam.

Sam Smith

 

 

Sam Smith is an English singer and songwriter and he appeared on a number of hit singles before his own debut album like Disclosure's Latch and Naughty Boy's La La La. He released his incredible In The Lonely Hour album in 2014 and it had many major hits. He has since been nominated for SIX Grammy Awards.

Favourite songs: Restart, Stay With Me and I've Told You Now.

Royal Blood

 This rock band is composed of bassist/singer Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher and they only formed very recently in 2013. They caught my eye after putting on an incredible performance for the 2014 EMA's. They are yet to release a full album but they are set to be a supporting act for the Foo Fighters on their 2015 tour and they said they're to start writing their album while on tour, I can't wait!

Favourite song: Figure It Out.

Beyoncé

 Queen B doesn't need any introduction, everyone knows her and how amazing she is. I am obsessed with this single recently and can't stop playing it. It's very different to anything Beyoncé's ever done before but I love how pretty she looks with minimal, if any, make-up on and the simplicity of the video which was all filmed on an iPhone. Looks like a pyjama party with B would be so much fun!
